Koh Samui has a small International Airport with direct flights from regional hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, and Bangkok.

As far as I know, there are no direct flights from Europe or Australia, so you will be forced to fly to any of the above hubs first. Flight prices are generally more expensive than in Phuket.

Phuket

Phuket has a much bigger International Airport which offers far more connections than Koh Samui. There are direct flights to Phuket from major hubs across Asia and the Middle East, as well as flights from Europe and Australia, both low-cost airlines and legacy carriers.

Flying to Phuket provides more flexibility. Flight prices are quite affordable too, especially when using low-cost carriers within Asia.

Overall, Phuket is easier and cheaper to reach by air.

Budget Travel – Is Koh Samui or Phuket cheaper?

Koh Samui

While not the cheapest Thai destination, Koh Samui offers good budget travel options compared to elsewhere in the West. Simple beach bungalows can be found for around $40-50 per night on the northern and eastern coasts.

These areas also have cheaper local restaurants with mains for $5-8. Songthaews and motorbike taxis provide transport around the island on the cheap. With some effort, Koh Samui can be done affordably.

Phuket

Koh Samui

Koh Samui’s beaches are just fantastic, all around the island. On the east coast, beaches like Chaweng and Lamai have fine white sand and gorgeous blue water perfect for swimming.

The northern shores boast long uncrowded stretches of sand without development. Secluded palm-shaded coves dot the south coast. Compared to Phuket, Koh Samui offers diverse options for beaching.

Phuket

Phuket’s beaches line its entire western coastline. Patong Beach features golden sand and the island’s liveliest beach scene. Kata and Karon Beach boast breathtaking beauty with certified clean waters.

The southern beaches around Rawai and Nai Harn have a more local vibe. Phuket’s bigger size means that finding your perfect stretch of sand is easy. Overall, both islands provide some of the best beaches in Thailand.

Phuket and Samui or Phuket for families

Koh Samui

Koh Samui works fairly well for families, especially in areas like Chaweng which have kids’ clubs, family rooms and activities. The island is very safe with little traffic, allowing kids to roam freely. Some nice beaches are swimmable for little ones.

Downsides include a lack of major family attractions, limited public transport, and fewer dining options for picky eaters. But families can enjoy quality time here.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui has an enjoyable nightlife scene, centered around the Chaweng and Lamai Beach areas. The bars and clubs here cater mainly to tourists with dance performances, live music, beer pong, and ladies’ nights.

Samui’s nightlife tends to wrap up earlier than Phuket with venues clearing out by 2 am. Overall, Samui’s nightlife focuses on relaxed open-air bars and pubs rather than late clubbing.

My favourite spot, for the last 20 years now, has been the Reggae Bar. I still remember the old pedestrian wood bridge, now removed, between the two sides of the lake. So shaky and unstable. I am pretty sure more than one tourist fell in the water after a night at the pub!

Phuket

Phuket is famous for its lively and varied nightlife drawing visitors from around the world. The epicentre is Bangla Road in Patong, where the nonstop action runs until dawn. Go-go bars, dance clubs, beer bars, cabarets and shows pack Bangla until the early morning hours.

Other beach areas like Kata and Karon also have vibrant but less intense nightlife. For full-on partying, Phuket is tough to beat.

Safety in Phuket and Koh Samui

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a very safe island destination, with violent crime levels extremely low. Petty theft like bag snatching can happen but is uncommon. The main safety concerns are typical beach area troubles like motorbike accidents and drink spiking.

Some taxi scams exist, so only use registered cab companies. I had one myself on my first visit when I was a bit of a novice. Overall, Koh Samui provides a secure environment for visitors with normal travel precautions.

Phuket

Like Koh Samui, Phuket is an exceptionally safe beach destination with little violent crime and no real danger areas. Petty theft occurs at typical global tourism rates. However, Phuket does see incidents of taxi scams, jet ski scams, and inflated tour/attraction prices.

Using metered taxis and booking tours through reputable channels keeps travel trouble-free. Phuket is very safe for travellers who avoid street solicitations.

Koh Samui Vs Phuket for a 1-week stay

Koh Samui

With a week in Koh Samui, spend 2-3 days relaxing on beaches like Chaweng and Lamai, enjoying water activities and nightlife. Then explore the rest of the island by songthaew or motorbike, hitting highlights like the Big Buddha, Fisherman’s Village, and Na Muang waterfalls.

Add a day trip to Ang Thong National Park’s gorgeous islands for hiking and kayaking. End with more beach time in your favourite area.

Renting a motorbike is quick and easy, and besides the Chaweng traffic, you won’t have a problem exploring the island. Make sure the scooter breaks work well at pick-up time, I have had a bad experience with that.

Phuket

A week in Phuket allows time to hit the top attractions at a comfortable pace. Spend 2 days beach hopping and swimming on the famed western coast beaches.

Check out Phuket Town’s cultural sights, temples, and food scene for a day. Take a day trip to explore Phang Nga Bay’s limestone karsts rising from the water.

Finish by relaxing at your favourite beach and enjoying a seafood barbecue as the sun sets. Seven days provides a great intro to Phuket.

Should I plan a honeymoon in Koh Samui or Phuket?

Koh Samui

Phuket is a well known island in Thailand for honeymoons with world-class beachfront resorts focused on romance and pampering. Options like private villas with infinity pools set the mood for newlywed bliss. Phuket offers high-end dining and nightlife beyond what’s available on Samui.

Boat excursions and day trips to Phuket’s coves allow couples to make unforgettable memories together. For pure luxury, Phuket edges out Samui slightly for honeymoons.

Adventure activities

Koh Samui

Koh Samui offers a range of land and sea adventures. Kayak through jungle rivers or take longtail boat trips to secluded coves. ATV through dirt tracks in the island’s interior to waterfalls and viewpoints.

Rock climbing opportunities abound both inland and along the coasts. Scuba diving around Phuket impresses with its underwater diversity and shipwrecks. From Phuket, you can also organise easy day trips to Koh Phi Phi and the Krabi Province.

It’s very in this case to make a choice for Phuket or Ko Samui. They both deliver big time in things to do. Surely you won’t get bored.

Are you thinking of doing some free climbing? You should check Krabi too, it may work better than Phuket and surely Koh Samui. In fact, it’s a well-known rock-climbing destination.

Koh Samui offers extensive accommodation options, from backpacker huts to luxury villas. Most lodging is clustered around the popular beaches of Chaweng and Lamai. Expect to pay $30-50 per night for decent 3-star hotels, or $100+ for high-end resorts with full amenities.

I highly suggest booking well in advance if you fly there in peak season, between December and April. Also, June to August is quite popular, being Koh Samui one of the few islands with good weather even during the wet season.

Phuket

Phuket enjoys a huge array of lodging choices on all beaches and in Phuket Town. Budget hotels near the beach run $40-60 per night. Luxury beachfront resorts fall in the $150-300+ range.

Phuket’s tourism volume means last-minute bookings are still possible. But for major holidays and high season, book 3-6 months out for more options. Phuket accommodation runs marginally cheaper overall than Koh Samui.

Koh Samui covers a modest area of around 250 km2 or 95 square miles. At its widest point, the island spans about 20 km across. The hilly interior jungle reaches a maximum elevation of about 600 meters.

Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, twice as big as Koh Samui (actually a bit more than that). The island stretches about 50 km in length from north to south. Phuket’s mountainous core includes peaks over 500 meters tall.

Phuket has 10 major beaches and diverse geography, definitely significantly bigger in size and area than Koh Samui.

Local Public Transportation in Phuket Vs Koh Samui

Koh Samui

Koh Samui offers basic public transport options. Songthaews, or converted pick-up trucks with bench seats, operate shared taxi routes around the island for about 100THB ($3 USD) per ride.

Additionally, smaller samlors and tuk-tuks shuttle travellers between local destinations for 150-300THB ($4-10 USD). I also suggest renting a motorbike, which gives so much more freedom.

Phuket

Phuket has a much more extensive public transport system. Air-conditioned buses connect all beaches and attractions for 25-50THB ($1-2 USD) per ride. Plentiful metered taxis are available, along with tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis for short hops.

It must be said that taxis are limited and charge an arm and a leg, compared to the average cost of living in Thailand. But, if you stick to public transportation, Phuket surpasses Koh Samui’s choices.

Shopping, spas and massage

Koh Samui

Koh Samui features some lively markets and shops selling souvenirs, clothing, and Thai handicrafts. Chaweng offers the biggest selection from boutiques to stalls. Lamai, Bophut, and the port town of Nathon also have good local shopping.

High-quality spas and massage studios are located across the island, with beach massages starting at around 300THB ($10 USD) per hour.

Phuket

Phuket boasts far more extensive shopping and spa choices as a major tourist hub. Huge malls, upscale Plaza stores, street markets, and boutiques provide endless shopping opportunities.

Phuket Town has the best selections of souvenirs and handicrafts. World-class spas and affordable beach massages can be found across the island. For retail therapy and pampering, Phuket is tough to top.

Internet & connectivity

Koh Samui

Koh Samui generally has decent WiFi available, especially in resort areas like Chaweng and Lamai. Most hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars offer free WiFi for customers, though speeds can be hit or miss. Local SIM cards with data packages are affordable and provide good connectivity across the island.

For remote lodging or travel outside main areas, be prepared for occasional disruptions. For this reason, I always suggest downloading the off-line map of the island. You will end up also using less data.

Phuket

As Thailand’s top tourist destination, Phuket offers excellent internet infrastructure. WiFi speeds are blazing fast nearly everywhere, from hotels and apartments to cafes, malls and attractions.

Local Thai SIMs with data are very inexpensive. Tourist SIM deals offer packages with huge amounts of data. Phuket’s connectivity outpaces other Thai islands. In fact, it’s not unusual to meet people on the island working remotely with businesses in Europe, the USA or Australia.
