Financial crisis have the benefit to empty sites that in most of the cases are re-used by local artists. This is what happened to the NDSM area, a formal dock few minutes from the Amsterdam centre. Just grab a free ferry from the pier behind the main station and you will be there in no time.

The docks have been refurbished and they are now used by local and international artists. I was there for a project called Industrial Reverse Engineering and I was really surprised by the great independent organisation of the area. Anarchy may sometime work, better than any democracy.
