Amsterdam is a well world famous city, very romantic, lovely lanes connected by bridges and awesome buildings dated back to the 16th century. There is only one drawback, a massive tourism. If you are around look at smaller towns as an alternative. This is Leiden, just 20mins by train from Amsterdam, a smaller scale although full of charm where you will unlikely spot tourists around.
